Phillipe Starck: Why Design?

January 3, 2008 Add a Comment

I really want to hate Phillipe Starck. Every time I see his designs I appreciate them but I don’t want to love him. I want to imagine him as this person I would dislike… this designer who is all ego and very little to say.

So then why is he so damn lovable in this video? Maybe it’s the broken English, his Parisian charm, or his self awareness that the work he does is unimportant but he is compelled to do it.

I think that he sums up user-centered design as well as anyone in the beginning and talks about the role of design in today’s troubling times.

The talk sprawls a little but he is funny, engaging and memorable.
