Originally started as a shareware and freeware download site it has become one of the longest lasting and most visited sites on the Internet attracting half a million visitors a month.

Tucows, facing increased competition from other download sites and software publishers sites, rethought its purpose. While they would always offer easy access to downloadable, shareware and freeware, they believed that the site needed to support other user needs. Namely, that most people don't think about shareware or software in terms of actual titles but in terms of need. For example, "I don't need Winzip I need to open this file someone emailed me".
